What is the GDPR?
GDPR, the new European Union general data protection regulation, is a regulation in data protection and privacy for all individuals within the EU and the EEA. Coming into effect on May 25, 2018, it's designed to harmonize data privacy laws in Europe.
What does the GDPR mean for Oura users?
Oura will be compliant with GDPR when it comes to effect on May 25, 2018. By this date we’ll be integrating an explicit consent mechanism for the processing of the measurement data, and for providing more detailed and transparent information about how our users data is handled.
Here is an overview of what happens when you use the Oura ring, the Oura app and Oura Cloud:
- The ring collects your physiological signals, such as heart rate, body temperature deviation and movement.
- The ring syncs the data it collects to the Oura app. Your data is connected to the Oura account you have created when taking the Oura ring into use.
- The Oura app syncs your data with our servers. The Oura ring, the Oura app and Oura Cloud use the raw data gathered by the ring to guide you towards better recovery and sleep. Your data is uploaded to our servers so that we can offer you the full Oura experience and also keep improving our services. You can also switch rings and phones without losing your data.
How and why we process your personal data
The metrics you track with your Oura ring are truly personal. That is the driving force behind what we do: to empower you to track, understand and optimize your sleep and recovery. The Oura ring and app cannot do it without getting to know you very closely.
That said, we only ask you to give the information that is necessary for the Oura ring and app to work optimally. We ask you to give your personal details, such as height and weight, because they are used in our activity calculations to give you more accurate feedback.
Please note that your data may be considered health data under some jurisdictions.
How we protect your privacy
Your data is stored according to industry best practices and handled with care and respect. The data gathered by the Oura ring is stored on our servers located in Europe.
We use aggregated and anonymized data to make our services better, to gain insights into improving sleep and recovery and communicating about our findings to the Oura community.

How you can control what messages you receive from us
You can also control what messages you get from us. At the end of our emails you will find the option to unsubscribe from receiving them. We’ll also add the ability to limit the number of messages you get in the Oura app. Please note that important emails or in-app messages will be sent to you if they contain crucial information, even if you have unsubscribed.
