Both the first and new Oura ring feature sensors that measure your body signals:

  • Two infrared LEDs that measure your blood volume pulse (PPG) and from there, your resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate among other.
  • Body temperature sensor that measures your nocturnal body temperature deviation.
  • 3D accelerometer that measures your movement. The new Oura ring features also a gyroscope.

The new ring features renewed sensors. It also has a new mechanical design, meaning that the sensors aren’t located in the same place than in the first Oura ring. The new sensor components and their positioning provide for even more accurate body signal tracking. 

If you have worn the first Oura ring and switch to the new ring, you’ll keep seeing your sleep, readiness and activity data as before, but with some possible changes in details. 

Body temperature deviation. When you take the new Oura ring into use, it will take about a week for the new ring to re-establish your body temperature baseline. During that time, you may see some variation in the baseline values, but that will settle once the baseline is established.

Activity tracking. The renewed sensors of the new Oura ring improve activity measurements to a degree. You may notice this in that your calorie calculations show more burned calories than before.
Oura shows you both your active calories and total burn. Active calories show the kilocalories you burn by daily activity and exercise. Total burn is your total daily energy expenditure which sums up active calories with your basal metabolism and sedentary calories, i.e. all kilocalories you burn during the day whether active or resting.

Sleep tracking. At first, the sleep tracking accuracy of the new Oura ring is on average at the same level than in the first Oura ring. However, the upgraded sensors and modifications in raw signal processing mean that results are not 100% identical minute by minute. The evolved hardware of the new Oura ring gives us room for further sleep tracking improvements down the road.

Infrared LEDs. The infrared LEDs of the new Oura ring need less luminosity and use less power than before. The infrared LEDs of the first Oura ring require higher luminosity, and this can disturb the measurements of the new ring. This is why we don’t recommend you to keep on wearing the first Oura ring, especially on the same hand than the new ring. 

Wearing the ring. If you wear the new Oura ring on another hand than you used to wear the first Oura ring (switch from dominant to non-dominant hand or vice versa), or on a different finger, you may notice minor changes in the data. Some calculations can be influenced by the positioning of the ring in either dominant or non-dominant hand. Overall, consistency in wearing the ring helps you obtain long-term data of trends and correlations in your sleep, activity and overall readiness.

You’ll get most accurate measurements when you keep your ring in a correct position: the ridge of Balance or plain of Heritage facing upwards.
